Crashed near Neuringe, Germany, near the Dutch border at 12:45h. The plane nicknamed ‘Rugged Rebel’, had problems with the engine and when this also caught fire the pilot decided to get out with his parachute. The plane then dived into the peat near the village of Neuringe. The plane almost disappeared completely in the peat. Below some pictures which I took at the interesting SLO Drenthe exhibition in Schoonebeek on May 5th, 2025, showing the aircraft with its pilot in the UK and a picture of the Mustang some months earlier when it encountered problems also and needed to make a successful emergency landing at Honington on October 17th, 1944. (both part of the SLO Drenthe Collection). More information can be found on the SLO Drenthe website here. |

Oud-Schoonebeek |

It crashed on a night mission, to the area of Hamburg, near Oud-Schoonebeek in the early morning (05:15h) after having been hit by FLAK and/or German fighters. At a certain moment the severely damaged aircraft, on its way back to Melsbeek, Belgium, burst into flames and the crew decided to jump. Sadly they were too low and their parachutes did not open completely so both died. They were buried on the cemetery at Schoonebeek. Below a side view drawing of this Mosquito (Harry Prins) and pictures of the graves I took at the cemetery Schoonebeek on May 5th, 2025. More information about the incident can be found on the SLO Drenthe website here and also on the SGLO website here: T5594. |
