Crashed into the Waddenzee near Wierum, NL at 22:58h after being shot down by Uffz Heinz Vinke.More. RAF pilot Leslie Parkin was sadly killed but the picture shows his medal, among them the Distinguished Flying Cross. (Displayed at the Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, May 3rd 2025, Harry Prins). Crashed near Jelsum, NL. It went airborne 11:40 and on a Photo Recce mission to Wilhelmshaven. The pilot Alastair Thompson McDonald became POW and later escaped from the STALAG III prison camp in 1944. The picture shows the pilot. (exhibition, Fries Museum, May 3rd, 2025 by Harry Prins). The side view drawing shows the aircraft with its specific camera mountings behind the cockpit used for reconnaissance operations (origin SpitfireAA810 group – amended by Harry Prins). It made a emergency crashlanding near Blija, NL at 01:08h. The picture of the crew shows a mix from Canada, Wales, Australia and Rhodesia (currently Zimbabwe). All survived the crashlanding with their Stirling bomber near Blija. They all have been caught and made prisoner. (Stichting Missing Airmen Memorial Foundation). Picture was taken by me during the exhibition in the Fries Museum, May 3rd, 2025. The other picture was found on the internet showing the Stirling in better days (sadly source unknown). Crashed near Soarremoarre, NL at 00:47h. The Germans arranged simple graves for the fallen Allied aircrew. This wooden cross was given to Kenneth Preston who was found on the coast of the Waddenzee and was buried in town Kollum. Later it was replaced by a respectful white stone. This wooden cross was displayed at the exhibition in the Fries Museum. (May 3rd, 2025, Harry Prins). More information can be found on the SGLO website here: T1588. |

Crashed near Hindeloopen, NL. Pilots used canvas gloves when they came down in the water with their dinghy (survival boat). These gloves could be used as paddle. This glove was found with the dinghy near Schuilenburg, not far from Hindeloopen after the Halifax ditched into the IJsselmeer (Stichting Missing Airmen Memorial Foundation). One of the pilots (Anthony Springthorpe) was one of the four survivors using his parachute. He surrended himself to the Police to avoid problems with local people trying to hide him. One of the local people received a escape kit from him and took a picture of him before he went to the police (Pictures taken by me during the exhibition in the Fries Museum, May 3rd, 2025.) This Wellington crashed near Hoogstede after it was shot down by a BF 110 nightfighter (1./NJG3) from airbase Vechta. Before it crashed it flew along the “Bathorner Diek”. It flew a night bombing mission to Bremen and when it reach the Dutch border on the returnflight to the UK they encountered the Nightfighter which ended their mission. three of the crew members survived. Below a picture which was taken at the crashsite (SLO Drenthe collection and part of the nice exhibition at Schoonebeek May 5th, 2025). This Lancaster was recovered in 2017, 75 years after it crashed between Wartena and Eernewoude, NL in the night of 4 to 5 September 1942. The pictures show one of the machineguns of the aircraft which was found during the recovery. I took these pictures of it during the exhibition in the Fries Museum, May 3rd, 2025.. This Vickers Wellington crashed at 22:55h in the evening near Bornwird and Raard. It was on its way back home after a bombing operation for Hamburg, Germany, when it was shot down by a German DO-215 from Fliegerhorst Leeuwarden. The remains of a parachute, spent cartridges, the disintegrated interior of a life jacket, a cylinder, an exhaust and other pieces were on display in the Fries Museum, photographed by me on May 3, 2025.
